DJEBEL TOUBKAL (4167mt / 13671ft) 31.03ºN / 7.54ºW
Thirteen highest mountain of Africa and highest in the Atlas Range. The Toubkal Massif (Adrar n`Dern in Berber) is a tiny 30km long stretch within the 700km long Atlas Range. Djebel or Adrar n`Toubkal it`s situated inside the Haut Atlas Toubkal National Park. This range marks the clear division between the Northern lands and the desert south that stretch until the savannah thousand miles away.
Geologically mixed, mainly granite and limestone with some volcanic rocks, glued by desert dust. Due to this composition and the very hot/very cold variations brought by the seasons, it lacks big vertical walls. Slopes are mainly scree/grit and powdered rotten holds. Long are gone the times when there was a 5km long Glacier running down the northern valley.
Only in 1922 Toubkal was surely identified as the highest Atlas mountain. Until then it was thought to be the ancient extinct volcano Sirwa (old Siroua) 3305m high lying 50km away near the desert. Actually it´s not even the second since that position belongs to M´Goun (4068m). Within the Toubkal Massif the highest point was attributed to the Iferouane Peak (3996m). |
